John C. Fortier is on to direct Kenyon College’s new Center for the Study of American Democracy. He comes to us straight from the American Enterprise Institute, where he works as a research fellow. AEI a neoconservative citadel and the former home of such lovable characters as Paul Wolfowitz, John Bolton, Alan Keyes, and Fred Thompson.

Heyyy, raise your hand if you’re surprised.

I’m not worried–I’m really thrilled about the Center and Mr. Fortier looks like a great choice. He’s worked with the far more left-leaning Brookings Institution (and has an endorsement from a senior fellow there). He’s also authored quite a few great columns for the wonk rag Politico, all of which demonstrate a certain thoughtfulness regarding the mechanics of American democracy that will be invaluable as the Center develops. He cares about fair elections. He looks like a nice guy. Overall, I absolutely welcome Mr. Fortier and look forward to maybe taking a class with him next semester.

What I am a little worried about is the potential backlash against the Center when certain people on campus discover that the new guy is straight out of the viper’s nest. Will people look beyond the AEI name and see this guy for who he is–that is, a smart dude who’s interested in and cares about American democracy (and not in that saber-rattling, I-hit-you-because-I-love-you sort of way)? Let’s hope so.

John Fortier gave a conference at my former school 4 years ago. He was pretty great. He didn’t give too many conservative talking points. And he was pretty attractive for a conservative too.
